A home study is a review of an adoptive/foster family’s home, lifestyle, and child-care readiness. It is required in every form of adoption or foster care situation (including domestic infant adoption and foster care adoption) to ensure that any placement is in the best interest of the child. While the home study can sometimes feel invasive to adoptive/ foster families, it is important to be completely open and honest during this process. 

Home study services in Texas are provided by social workers licensed by the state. When selecting a Texas home study provider, it’s important to use someone who has the experience and knowledge to write a report that meets all state and federal requirements.

The responsibility of placing a child falls on the Texas Department of Family Protective Services, who supervises and ensures that those contracted to perform home studies provide careful and thorough assessments of personal characteristics and home environments. These studies must prove that foster parents and other substitute caregivers are capable of providing safe, nurturing homes that are in the best interests of the children in out-of-home care.
