Nonprofits Are Leading The Way During COVID-19. Here’s How You Can Help!

National Nonprofit Day is August 17th. How will you choose to give back?

What is #NationalNonprofitDay?

Every August 17th, National Nonprofit Day celebrates the incredible work of nonprofit organizations and charitable institutions.

Nonprofits exist to provide help, research, aid, and resources to people in need— whether that need is housing or art therapy or emergency assistance, among plenty of others.

This national day of remembrance and thanks feels especially timely in 2020. As the effects of the coronavirus pandemic have swept across the country, nonprofits around the world have poured time, money, and resources into helping those in need.

COVID-19 is creating all kinds of new needs that nonprofits are rushing to fill— mainly, financial assistance, mental health support, and food and supplies. According to the Census Bureau, more than one-third of Americans have displayed clinical signs of anxiety, depression, or both since the coronavirus pandemic began, and the Pew Research Center estimates that unemployment rose higher in three months of COVID-19 than it did in two years of the Great Recession.

In the face of these challenges, nonprofits have been providing food to homebound seniors and children, expanding resources to address mental health, supporting front-line workers and first responders, working with populations experiencing homelessness, and providing cash transfers and other financial support to those made newly vulnerable.

Naturally, as the pandemic has increased demand for all kinds of services, it seems fitting to take special time out of our summers to recognize the generosity of the human spirit. For many who have gotten sick, lost their jobs, or simply been isolated from family and friends, nonprofits have been a lifeline.

How can you celebrate National Nonprofit Day with Endeavors?

We would be honored if you chose to support Endeavors on National Nonprofit Day!

Endeavors® is a family of programs that weaves creative ideas with measurable outcomes to build social and common good! Ultimately, we empower people to build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.

This ranges from emergency assistance to Veteran support to homelessness care. We were able to help over 28,000 people in 2019, including 995 Veterans, 580 homeless Veterans, 20,474 survivors served across three states and one U.S. territory and nearly 2,000 children in 2019.

The best part? You can support nonprofits like Endeavors in so many different ways! Here are a few big ones:

  1. Utilize our programs.

Whether you need help or you know someone who needs help, our programs thrive when we have clients! Here are a few of the services we offer.

  • Disaster relief: Client-focused services for short-term relief and long-term recovery. We develop recovery plans, create safe environments, and provide resource referrals for individuals impacted by presidentially declared disasters.
  • Mental health: High-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care to Veterans and their families, regardless of their role while in uniform, discharge status, or ability to pay.
  • Veteran and military family services: Supportive services for Veterans and their military families focus on homelessness prevention & stabilization, parenting skills, and mental health care.
  • Community services: Case management, clinical services, and life-skills training for families, seniors, children, and individuals.
  • Housing services: Supportive housing, case management, professional counseling, life skills training, and employment opportunities focused on Veteran families and families and individuals with disabilities.
  • Supportive employment: Staffing services in response to emergent situations and healthcare setting needs. Supportive employment in professional custodial and groundskeeping roles for individuals with disabilities.
  1. Donate funds to help those in need

One of the simplest ways to support Endeavors is through donations! By going through this form, you can select which program you want to direct your funds to disaster relief, homelessness prevention, mental health, and telehealth, Veteran and family support, employing individuals with disabilities, Veteran wellness, home studies, and adoption services, safe services, emergency services, survivors of crime, or migrant child care. Whether one-time or recurring, every donation matters and makes a difference! Click here to donate.

  1. Donate new goods for those in need

Want to help in a tangible way? Donate new blankets, new socks, hygiene items, canned food, baby wipes, winter jackets, and flannels, or new gloves and mittens! Please contact the Development Team at [email protected] to receive an In-Kind Donation form.

  1. Try a corporate matching program

Did you know you may be able to double or triple your gift to Endeavors through your employer’s matching gift program?  Matching gifts are donations employers make to match their employees’ contributions to charitable nonprofits. To find out if your employer participates in a matching giving program, please contact your Human Resources Officer.

  1. Follow us and share our stories

Supporting nonprofits can be as simple as social media support! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn and help us increase our reach by sharing stories with your friends, family, and audience.

  1. Attend an event (online!)

Most in-person events have been postponed or canceled due to COVID-19, but online events like The Big Give can be just as effective! This annual twenty-four-hour online giving event has raised over $25 million for local San Antonio non-profits over the past six years. Mark your calendar for September 10th of this year!

No matter how you choose to celebrate National Nonprofit Day, we are so thankful for your support! We are so excited to keep moving forward with all our amazing partners, donors, and clients.
